In this series, the TDN takes a look at notable successes of European-based sires in North America. This week's column is highlighted by the victory of Heading (Starspangledbanner) at Keeneland.

Starspangledbanner Colt Triumphs At Keeneland

Gainesway homebred Heading trotted up a 4 1/2-length winner on Keeneland's opening day (video). The Starspangledbanner colt is trained by Graham Motion and was making his fourth start, second in America.

The first foal out of South African champion three-year-old filly and older mare Celtic Sea (Captain Al), the former Andrew Balding-trained colt is followed by a two-year-old colt by Tapit, and a yearling filly by Oscar Performance. Celtic Sea was covered by the latter sire last spring. Under the third dam is Brazilian Group 1 winner La Defense (Nedawi).

Coolmore's Starspangledbanner, who stands for €60,000 this year, has sired 23 winners from 38 runners in the U.S. (61%). His 11 stakes winners there are anchored by a trio of Grade I winners: Rhea Moon, State Of Rest and Gstaad.

Repeat Winner

East Jabip (Mehmas) maintained her perfect record with a victory at Keeneland for Brian Lynch on Thursday (video). Owned by Blue Bird Stables, she graduated at Gulfstream Park in late February.
